Our Past Projects

Desks for Magaleta.

After the success of our Desks for Kalilombe Project, we turned our focus to Magaleta Primary School in Dedza, Malawi. In July 2023, we saw a critical need: 900 students were attending classes without proper desks, sitting on the ground to learn. Determined to make a difference, we launched a new initiative to provide the necessary furniture.

By December 2023, thanks to our generous supporters, Magaleta Primary School was fully equipped with 330 brand-new desks. We worked with the same skilled carpenters from the Kalilombe project, ensuring every desk was built to last and provide a safe, comfortable learning environment.

The completion of this project strengthens our commitment to our mission: to eliminate the desk shortage in Malawi, one school at a time. Next up, we are focused on furnishing Nachilambo Primary School with the same dedication and care.

Desks for Chankhanga Project.

It all started at Chankhanga Primary School in Kasungu, Malawi. Back in September of 2017, the Desks for Chankhanga Project was born. Our Founder, Chikondi Kulemeka, was staying in Malawi for the summer when she noticed the students at Chankhanga Primary School did not have desks to sit on for school.

Nearly two years later, in 2019, 960 desks were built and installed for all 2,880 students at Chankhanga Primary School.

The original project had been fulfilled but the dedicated members of Team USA were ready to tackle yet another project.

Desks for Kalilombe Project.

Shortly after the completion of the Desks for Chankhanga Project, the Desks for Kalilombe Project began fundraising to bring desks to students in Dedza, Malawi who were forced to learn sitting on the ground.

This project was personal for our Board Chairperson, Andrew Kulemeka, who personally attended Kalilombe Primary School as a child. Quickly funds were raised and desks were built, and on September 21st of 2021 the project was completed. All 1,080 students were sitting in the new 360 desks provided through our project.

The completion of Kalilombe Primary School boosted the rebrand of our project to The Desks Project, as the mission became clear to tackle the desk crisis across Malawi.
